Tom Petty is one of the best selling artists of all time.  He has sold over 80 million records in his career.  Petty has eight platinum albums.  But, he has never had a No. 1 album.

That may change.

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers released Hypnotic Eye on July 29.  Billboard reports that the album will likely debut at No. 1 on their Billboard 200 album chart.

It might be difficult to believe that Petty has never had a No. 1 album, but it is true.  He has peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 chart twice.  He last album before Hypnotic Eye, 2010's Mojo, peaked at the No. 2 spot.  Damn the Torpedoes from 1979, often considered to be Petty's best work, spent seven weeks at No. 2.

What kept Damn the Torpedoes at No 2?

Pink Floyd's The Wall.
