Watch Metallica Take Lucky Fans on Tour of Headquarters

Three Metallica fans recently won the opportunity to get a tour of the band's legendary northern California headquarters with the band's own James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett as their tour guides!

Longtime Metallica string provider Ernie Ball was present to document the unique opportunity, which included Hetfield and Hammett showing off a ton of historic Metallica items. The two guitarists point out a number of items for the fans, including banners from historic tours and even Lady Justice's head from the band's ...And Justice for All tour.

"I love looking at it because it brings me back to those times, '84, '85," Hammett said, indicating the historic Ride the Lighting banner. "The one thing I live for is getting that bolt of inspiration and running to my guitar. And it still happens for me. As long as it still happens for me, then I'm really f***ing excited and happy."

Hetfield talks about how the band goes about making albums nowadays, explaining how the band's entire practice space is rigged with mics, so when they jam, all their sessions are saved. Metallica needs only go back through their tapes and pick out parts they like and they can stitch demos together.

Of course the space is jam-packed with guitars, amps, drums and even keyboards. Hammett shows off the band's "guitar library," a storage space containing what looks like hundreds of guitars stored in cases from floor to a very, very high ceiling.

You think they would notice if one or two of those went missing? Asking for a friend...

The band also has a "Hall of Inspiration," where they have tacked some of their favorite albums by other artists onto the walls of a corridor they walk every day.

It's a short but fascinating piece. You can watch it above.

Metallica just wrapped up a European tour in time for the Day of Giving on May 23. The band then plans to take the summer to recharge before heading back out on the road in the fall for the final U.S. leg of its WorldWired Tour.
