Scariest Places In The U.S...Including One In Iowa

With Halloween fast approaching, you might be wanting to get your scare on. Lots of states have creepy haunted houses that will get you spooked, but some parts of the country have haunted spots that have existed for a long time that are bound to make you feel all creeped out.

Thrillist has come out with a list of the scariest places in each state and, while I’ll be staying far away from them this Halloween, I'm betting there are a lot of you out there who’ll be dying (no pun intended) to check them out.

Some of the scary spots include (click here for the complete list):

  • The Alaskan Hotel, Juneau, Alaska – Alaska’s oldest-operating hotel is a legendary haunted spot, with a ghost of a miner’s wife roaming the halls. As the story goes, she became a prostitute while he was away and when he got back he was so upset he killed her.
  • Heaven’s Gate mass suicide site, Rancho Santa Fe, California – What’s creepier than the site where 39 members of the Heavan’s Gate cult killed themselves by drinking poisoned Kool-Aid. The home that existed there has long been torn down, but people still make pilgrimages to the abandoned site.
  • The Stanley Hotel, Estes Park, Colorado – Anyone who’s watched Stephen King’s “The Shining” will know why this hotel is creepy. The Stanley Hotel was the inspiration for the book’s Overlook hotel.
  • Villisca Axe Murder House, Villisca, Iowa – Eight people were killed here by an ax-murderer and you can get your creep on by staying the night. The 100-year-old case is still unsolved, but the place is something spook fans will want to check out with daily tours and nightly stays offered.
  • Eastern State Penitentiary, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - The 1829 prison is known as being a testing location for a number of torturous prisoner"reform" techniques. The jail, which had prisoners like Al Capone and bank robber Willie Sutton, offers nightly haunted tours.
  • The Bell Witch Cave, Adams, Tennessee – This spooky cave is where the 19th century’s “Kate” the Bell Witch ghost resided as she tormented the Bell family, including repeated attempts to choke the family matriarch. Tours of the cave are now offered, with visitors swearing they’ve felt sensations of being pushed, touched, or held down by a heavy weight.
  • Castle of Chaos, Midvale, Utah – A completely underground haunted attraction complete with vampires, zombies, and disorienting fog, as well as escape rooms and a live-action theater.
