What In The World Is A "Demon Deacon?"

The Demon Deacon is the mascot of Wake Forest University, a school located in Winston-SalemNorth Carolina. Probably best known for its slightly unorthodox name and appearance, the Demon Deacon has become a mainstay in the world of U.S. college mascots. But what IS a "demon deacon?"

The actual mascot made its first appearance in 1941. As the "Demon Deacon" terminology became more popular, Jack Baldwin (1943 Wake Forest graduate) became the first Deacon mascot. They were orginally called the Tigers...but there are so many Tigers out there...but only one Demon Deacon. So, how did they go from being the Tigers to the Demon Deacons? It's a very long story...and, at the risk of plagiarizing someone else's work, I'll just post the link so you can read the story for yourself. It's actually pretty interesting...
